About the College

Introduction: In the beginning of the third quarter of 20th century –on the 18th August 1954 to be the precise, the infant Laxmi Venkatesh Desai College was began to make a name for itself with just 9 students on its rolls in a thatched structure in Raichur.

The college has greatly contributed in education for three generation thereby changing socio, economic and culture scenario in this so called notified socio- economically backward region of the state.

Establishment of the Department:

As said by Ahmed Deedat “Language is the key to the heart of the people”, English is the International language, plays important role in modern world. Learning English has become essential in the globalization era. In this perspective the department is performing the best to inculcate the communication skills in general and English literature in particular.

The Department of English has its inception simultaneously with the advent of the College in the year 1954. Prof. Krishna Shetty was the pioneer, who accomplished the herculean task of establishing the department. It is to the credit of the department that two of its exheads, Prof Vasudev Bhatt and Prof.A. Krishnan, became the Principals of the College.

Since then, the UG students of various streams are learning General English as part of their curriculum. The department capacitates the students in addressing the demands and issues of the times with humanitarian concern. It also enables them in correlating literature with contemporary issues thereby inculcating a flair for aesthetic appreciation and expression.
The faculty here aims to help students voice their altruistic concerns through honing their communication skills. Hence, the department strives to satiate the various linguistic needs of the students from different academic levels by providing them with ample exposure to the language, thereby enabling them to acquire language competence. The faculty is pledged on keeping abreast of the latest trends in teaching methodologies by attending workshops and seminars.
The department is vigilant and keen in organizing remedial classes, short term courses, communicative and spoken English classes and seminars for the academic excellence of the students. The English club run by the department is rich in fun filled activities and events where students get to tailor-made sessions to cater to their needs. It is also home for creative expression and original out-of-the-box thinking. It has its own repository of literary books issued to its members. Since most of the students are from rural background with poor communication skills and bare minimum knowledge in English, the department esteems and employs a student-centric pedagogic strategy that will add to their attainment of professional and career competence. We constantly challenge our students who are in the fringes of the society to carve a niche for themselves by addressing their own issues that somehow is synonymous with the worlds “Lingual dimension to the study of the English”. Keeping the demand of the students and the need for depth of the English language to be penetrated the College started the subject of “Optional English” from the academic year 2005.
